Pouffe chair concept uses minimalist design and recyclable materials

There are two kinds of people when it comes to chairs and stools. Those who like cutely-designed seats and those who want comfortable resting places for their behinds. While I am always the latter, there are a lot of people looking for the former. That’s why we see uniquely designed chairs and stools that can also double as a sort of art piece, even though they don’t look the most comfortable to sit on.

Designer: Design Studio701

The Rio Pouffe is a concept for a chair that is able to combine modern aesthetic with an eco-friendly design. Because there is a trend (hopefully, a lasting trend) of people looking for products that are made from sustainable materials, this kind of design can hit it off with that segment if it reaches the production stage. They did not give details as to what these eco-friendly materials are but if we’re to look at the planters that Harshdeep, the company that they made the design for, we’re looking at materials like bamboo, coffee husks, etc.

The chairs themselves look like inverted onions with a seat surface and a small backrest. They are shaped that way to attract people’s attention and are designed to be lightweight and durable to “make sitting a breeze”. The colors are also in earthy tones like warm browns, soothing greens, calming blues, and neutral grays in keeping with the natural aesthetic that they are going for. It seems comfortable enough although for me, the small back rest may not be enough if I’ll be sitting on it for a long time.

As a concept, this seems to be pretty interesting if you’re the type looking for good-looking chairs that are also eco-friendly. It would have been better to see what are those recyclable materials that they will use to produce the chairs. But in terms of design, this seems to be a simple but solid one.

Cubicle concept proposes a personal bunker for rest, focus, and collaboration https://www.yankodesign.com/2024/10/28/cubicle-concept-proposes-a-personal-bunker-for-rest-focus-and-collaboration/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=cubicle-concept-proposes-a-personal-bunker-for-rest-focus-and-collaboration Mon, 28 Oct 2024 13:20:08 +0000 https://www.yankodesign.com/?p=516897

Cubicle concept proposes a personal bunker for rest, focus, and collaboration

]]>

Open floor plans have become the trend after painting office cubicles in a negative light, blamed for the breakdown of human communication and social connections between colleagues. At the same time, however, these “borderless” arrangements also bring about distractions, tensions, and even stress, not to mention the complete lack of privacy when you do want it.

It doesn’t have to be an all-or-nothing solution, though, and cubicles don’t have to be the anti-social cages they’re made out to be. This personal bunker concept, for example, does put up barriers to let you focus and relax in peace, but literally leaves a window open when you do need to mingle with other people for work or study.

Designer: Ma. Camilla Isabel Reyes

Personal pod designs are becoming more common these days. People are realizing that open spaces aren’t all that they’re cut out to be and want to have some personal space from time to time. Being able to block off distractions in a visible and physical way can help improve concentration, especially when the pod includes features like soothing music and relaxing lights to help set the mood.

BrainBunk is a design concept for a personal pod intended to maximize focus and rest, while still leaving the option for communication without leaving the space. Unlike a normal desk cubicle that simply puts up walls around the table, it’s pretty much a miniature room complete with a reclining chair. The idea is to be able to work, eat, rest, or even sleep inside, all within your own personal bubble.

What makes the design a bit different from totally enclosed pods is that it has a sliding window mechanism that opens a corner of the cubicle. This would allow the person inside to communicate with others face-to-face without having to get up and walk out. And when they’re done and want to have their solitude back, they can simply slide the panel back out.

BrainBunk can have three configurations that take advantage of this unique feature. A lone cubicle would be great for the solitary worker, but groups of two or four allow that collaborative option among workers or even students. It’s a simple yet effective design for a personal space that doesn’t go over the top in terms of features and amenities, though it could probably do with a bit of improvement in the choice of more sustainable materials.

As awareness grows regarding the importance of quality sleep for health and productivity, many face challenges with poor sleep habits and reliance on short-term remedies like pills, which can have adverse effects. Additionally, increasing stress levels and evolving lifestyles have led to disrupted sleep patterns due to excessive use of mobile phones and other electronic devices.

Note that LED screens from devices like computers, laptops, TVs, smartphones, and tablets emit high levels of blue light, which can disrupt the release of melatonin in the evening, leading to delayed or disrupted sleep cycles. This reliance on technology has led to the emergence of a thriving industry focused on providing solutions for better sleep.

]]>

We all know how bad plastic is for the planet, but no one will deny its versatility and affordability. Until we’re able to create a truly sustainable replacement that’s just as cheap to make, all we can do is take measures to reduce their impact on the environment. That might mean using bio-plastics, or it may mean reusing and recycling plastic into some other form.

Transforming plastic into new materials isn’t exactly new, but this innovation puts a new spin on that idea. Not only does it recycle plastic without using binders or glue, it also makes the resulting material almost as strong and as beautiful as stone. The result: striking furniture made almost 100% from plastic.

Desingers: Jared Seifert, Lauren Copping (Design Declassified)

There are plenty of ways to recycle plastic, but unlike wood or paper, the process involves a lot of water and energy. They also usually involve mixing some sort of binder or glue to keep the new material together, which ironically can make the new recycled plastic product less sustainable. And there’s also that distinct “recycled” aesthetic that may sometimes be seen as an advantage but can also be considered a flaw.

Design Declassified has developed a new kind of material that’s 100% made from recycled post-consumer and post-industrial thermoplastics without adding glue, resins, or even coloring to the mixture. This means that, after many years, the sheets can be recycled again for other purposes.

The recycled plastic sheets also come with a natural appearance not unlike marble or terrazzo, giving the material a unique character that looks nothing like your stereotypical recycled plastic. Available colors at the moment include Salt and Pepper, Moonlight, Mint, and Sea Moss, blends that you’d see in actual stone designs.

The material is durable as well, though definitely not as strong as marble or ceramic. In exchange, it retains its lightweight properties that make it easy to move around. It’s easy to cut into different shapes and forms as well, making it quite suitable for furniture like furniture, tiles for floors and walls, lighting, and even art installations.

Design Declassified is definitely an interesting solution to the plastic waste problem, especially if it can be mass-produced in an equally sustainable way. Although it doesn’t exactly reduce our reliance on plastic, it could at least help lessen the need to produce virgin plastic, especially if a more beautiful but equally versatile alternative is made available more easily.

Ever imagined sitting on a typeface? Or better yet, a single letter? It may sound surreal, but the ORMA Chair turns this whimsical thought into a reality. Inspired by the lowercase letter “a” from the AH Forma typeface, the ORMA Chair merges the worlds of typography and furniture design into a modern and functional masterpiece. Designed for Design Week Mexico 2024, this piece transforms a familiar character into a sculptural and practical form of seating.

Designer: Andrés Higueros and (ro)drigo méndez sosa

The ORMA Chair showcases how the shapes and proportions of a type family can serve as a base for much more than just text. The AH Forma typeface, known for its versatile use across various contexts, becomes the backbone of this innovative design, transforming the flat, two-dimensional letter into a three-dimensional piece of furniture. This bold experimentation with type reminds us how far design can stretch when creative boundaries are pushed.

The chair’s design uses the rounded portion of the letter “a” as its seat. Depending on how it’s positioned, there are two different ways to experience the chair. In one form, the rounded seat offers comfort, while the terminal of the letter serves as a handrest. Alternatively, when reversed, the terminal transforms into a backrest, providing ergonomic support. It’s fascinating to imagine the comfort it offers, although one might wonder how long one could remain seated given its unconventional structure, making it more of an art piece than a prolonged seating solution.

The ORMA Chair comes in two distinct models: the “Light” and “Regular” versions, each reflecting the characteristics of their respective typeface styles. The “Light” version, known as ORMA Chair Light Condensed, interprets the lightness and elegance of the AH Forma Light style into a sleek dining chair. This version uses the terminal as a backrest and the rounded parts as legs, resembling the minimalist structure of early bicycles. The “Regular” version, aptly named ORMA Chair Regular, translates the balanced and sturdier style of the Regular typeface into a comfortable armchair. The design variation between these two chairs reflects how typography can be adapted to suit different environments while maintaining a shared aesthetic foundation.

The Condensed version of the ORMA Chair is ideal for more refined and contemporary spaces, perfect for dining rooms or stylish corners in elegant homes. On the other hand, the Regular version’s balanced design makes it more suitable for informal settings such as office lobbies or relaxed living spaces. Despite their differences, both chairs uphold a common theme: transforming a typographic symbol into a usable, functional object.

For Yanko Design readers passionate about cutting-edge furniture design, High Point Market offers an unparalleled glimpse into the future of home interiors.

The 2024 edition of High Point Market promises to showcase evolving design philosophies, blending comfort with sustainability and nostalgia with innovation. As we explore the top furniture design trends 2024, we’ll spotlight five noteworthy brands shaping the industry’s future.

Emerging Trends Shaping Furniture Design in 2024

Before diving into the brands, let’s examine the key trends dominating the furniture landscape in 2024:

 1. Organic Shapes and Curves: Furniture designs embrace softer, more fluid forms. Curved sofas, rounded armchairs, and scalloped edges are prevalent, creating inviting and ergonomic spaces.
 2. Earthy Color Palettes with Bold Accents: While warm neutrals and natural tones dominate, vibrant hues, especially greens, make bold statements in upholstery and case goods.
 3. Natural Materials and Textures: The use of wood, stone, and textural fabrics like boucle and tweed continues to gain momentum, adding depth and character to furniture pieces.
 4. Sustainable and Biophilic Design: Eco-friendly materials and production methods are at the forefront, with designs that connect occupants more closely to nature.
 5. Multifunctional and Flexible Furniture: As living spaces evolve, furniture that serves multiple purposes is becoming increasingly important.

Now, let’s explore five noteworthy brands embodying these trends and making waves at High Point Market 2024.

1. Tribesigns: Innovative Solutions for Modern Living

Making its US market debut at High Point Market 2024, Tribesigns is a fast-growing global furniture brand, quickly gaining attention for its commitment to providing cozy and efficient home and office solutions. Tribesigns’ approach aligns perfectly with the trend toward multifunctional and flexible furniture. Their comprehensive range of products, from desks and console tables to organizers and bookcases, caters to the evolving needs of modern homes and offices. The brand’s slogan, “Designed for Life,” emphasizes creating aesthetically pleasing but also functional and durable furniture.

What sets Tribesigns apart is its commitment to sustainability. Since 2023, it has partnered with One Tree Planted, pledging to plant 20,000 trees. This initiative resonates with the growing consumer demand for eco-friendly practices in furniture production.

At High Point Market, Tribesigns showcases many stylish and innovative furniture products. Their designs often feature clean lines and versatile forms, making them ideal for contemporary interiors that require adaptable solutions. Look for their space-saving desks and modular storage systems, particularly relevant in today’s flexible work environments.

A stalwart in the industry, Currey & Company continues to impress with its ability to blend artistry with functionality. Known for its lighting fixtures, furniture, and accessories, the brand has been a regular at High Point Market, consistently introducing designs that capture the zeitgeist of interior trends.

In 2024, Currey & Company is leaning into the organic shapes trend with their latest furniture introductions. Their new console tables, featuring circle-cutout brass and marble tops, exemplify the move towards softer, more fluid forms in furniture design. These pieces serve as functional elements and as sculptural art pieces in their own right.

The brand’s use of natural materials, particularly in its lighting designs, aligns with the ongoing preference for organic textures and sustainable materials. Look for their handcrafted pieces that showcase the beauty of natural wood, stone, and metal, often with artisanal finishes that add depth and character.
Currey & Company’s lighting designs for 2024 also reflect the retro revival trend with a modern twist. Their chandeliers and pendants often draw inspiration from vintage forms but update them with contemporary materials and technologies, creating nostalgic and fresh pieces.

3. Vanguard Furniture: Customization Meets Sustainability

Vanguard Furniture has long been known for its commitment to customization. It allows designers and homeowners to create unique pieces tailored to their specific needs. In 2024, the brand is doubling down on this approach while emphasizing sustainability in its production processes.

This year, Vanguard is showcasing upholstered pieces that embody the trend of earthy color palettes with bold accents. Their sofas and chairs feature base fabrics in warm neutrals, complemented by vibrant pillows and throws in saturated hues, particularly greens and blues.

Vanguard’s case goods collection for 2024 highlights the trend towards natural materials and textures. Their dining tables and sideboards showcase rich wood grains and innovative finishes that bring out the inherent beauty of the materials. The brand’s use of sustainably sourced wood and low-VOC finishes aligns with the growing demand for eco-friendly furniture options.

One trend that Vanguard is embracing is the layered accent table look. Their new collections feature nesting tables and modular side table systems that allow for flexible, dynamic arrangements in living spaces.

4. Made Goods: Artisanal Luxury for the Modern Home

Made Goods has carved out a niche in the luxury furniture market, focusing on unique materials and artisanal craftsmanship. At High Point Market 2024, the brand is showcasing pieces that exemplify the trends of natural textures and statement design.

One of Made Goods’ introductions is a dining table featuring a banana bark-paneled top. This innovative use of materials creates a striking visual effect and aligns with the trend toward incorporating natural, sustainable materials in furniture design. The brand’s lighting collection for 2024 embraces the trend of organic shapes, with fixtures like the beaded, sun-hat-shaped Lourdes chandelier offering a playful yet sophisticated take on sculptural lighting.

Made Goods is also at the forefront of the trend towards bold, statement pieces. Their new collections include ceramic stools with metallic finishes and intricately carved wooden consoles designed to serve as focal points in interior spaces.

5. Baker Furniture: Timeless Elegance Meets Modern Innovation

Their latest collections showcase a masterful blend of traditional techniques and modern aesthetics. Their new dining table features a live-edge wood top supported by a geometrically inspired metal base. This piece encapsulates the trend towards natural materials while incorporating clean, contemporary lines.

Baker is also introducing a line of upholstered pieces that exemplify the curved furniture trend. Their new sofa collection features gently rounded forms and plush, textured fabrics, offering both visual and tactile comfort. These pieces are available in a range of earthy tones, from warm terracottas to soft sage greens, aligning with the current color trends.

In response to the growing demand for multifunctional furniture, Baker is unveiling a series of “transformer” pieces. These include a console table that expands into a dining table and a coffee table with adjustable height and extendable surfaces, perfect for homes where space is at a premium.

High Point Market 2024: A Glimpse into the Future of Furniture Design

The trends on display at High Point Market 2024 reflect broader shifts in how we live and work. ]]>

People these days are adopting more and more pets, sometimes more than their homes can accommodate. Dogs might have no problems staying in outdoor doghouses, but domesticated felines tend to prefer indoor accommodations. Of course, there’s no shortage of furniture for cats, ranging from litter boxes to scratching posts to climbing trees. The problem is that the majority of them are all designed to take up space on the floor, which leaves less room for human furniture. Just like how humans realize they have plenty of unused vertical space, this cat furniture concept grows upward rather than sideways to let you comfortably accommodate one or more furry felines, even if you don’t have much space for yourself either.

Designer: Arthur Zheng (Kuang Hsu)

Vertical furniture is definitely becoming a trend as we realize how precious little floor space we actually have. Unfortunately, that’s only part of the solution, because just like floor space, the vertical situation in our homes can change as well. Unlike regular furniture, however, vertical designs often have a fixed height and configuration, preventing us from easily rearranging these pieces of furniture.

FROHZ Cat Castle is a design concept that solves both those problems with a simple modular design. The furniture system is made of five pieces that can be freely rearranged as needed. Of course, they have certain limits given their fixed shapes, but you can, in theory, combine them in many ways without permanently committing to a particular configuration.

The largest part of the modular furniture system is the cat litter box, a tall cabinet with two doors at the top, one of which has an oval opening for the cat to crawl into. A “Play/Rest” box has a slightly similar design, except it’s a simpler and smaller box designed only to be a resting spot. An even simpler version of this is an arched structure with openings at the front and the back. There’s also an L-shaped scratching “post” and a simple storage box to keep kitty toys and accessories.

Arranging these pieces is as simple as stacking them on top of each other or putting them side by side, with some connectors to keep them from easily falling apart from the cat’s movement. The open-ended design even allows for more than one piece of each type to accommodate more than one feline in the house. And should the number of pets you own increase or decrease, you can quickly add or remove modules as needed. You might even be able to challenge yourself to come up with a creative design, one that would truly make your cat feel like a king or queen in its own castle.

Home and commercial design trends are ever-changing, with modular furniture as the popular choice for the interiors. Its versatility and practicality make it ideal for maximizing space, particularly in compact offices and urban apartments. With flexible and customizable features, modular pieces can be arranged to suit different needs, like providing a guest bed, setting up a home office, incorporating multiple workstations, or organizing storage solutions. Take a look at these modular furniture design trends that are gaining traction in 2024.

Designer: Kyungseon Nam

1. Minimalistic Furniture Design

Minimalism is a prevailing influence in furniture design, often characterized by sleek designs and light wood tones. These pieces feature clean lines and sophisticated aesthetics, contributing to a sense of openness, sleekness, and tranquility within the overall decor.

Square to Square is a versatile furniture concept featuring an innovative sliding grid system. Initially serving as a table or ottoman, it seamlessly transforms into a dining table or workspace setup. Meditation is known to offer mental well-being benefits by encouraging the observation of thoughts neutrally before refocusing attention on the breath or another focal point. Essentially, meditation encourages observing thoughts and emotions without fixating on positives or avoiding negatives. Even though meditation doesn’t demand equipment, meditation apps, cushions, chairs, pods, and innovative products could provide a helpful start and assist in sustaining the routine.

Governors Point, an exclusive residential enclave, sits on a pristine 125-acre peninsula in Washington’s Salish Sea. Envisioned by acclaimed architect Omer Arbel, this unique community offers an exquisite mix of luxury living and deep respect for the environment. The development features 16 custom waterfront homes that blend seamlessly into the surrounding landscape. Each home is crafted to celebrate the raw beauty of the area, ensuring it complements rather than overpowers the natural setting.

Designer: Omer Arbel

Governors Point’s history adds depth to its current form. Originally, the site was slated for over 300 homes and multiple marinas, but a transformative partnership between design entrepreneur Randy Bishop and the Whatcom Land Trust shifted its destiny. Their focus was on conservation, turning Governors Point into a haven for both residents and nature.

Exterior Design: Blending With Nature

The exterior of each home at Governors Point reflects Omer Arbel’s innovative approach to merging architecture with nature. The homes are placed strategically along the peninsula, with some landward facades partially buried to reduce their visual presence and make them part of the landscape.

On the west-facing side, a “cloudlike” exterior skin made from cedar burl offcuts adds a striking visual feature. These cedar pieces, described as “boulder-shaped modules,” are mounted on metal standoffs and gently sway, creating a kinetic effect. Over time, moss and lichens will grow on these surfaces, adding a living, evolving element to the design.

Roofs are designed to allow the forest to grow over them, making the homes seem like natural extensions of the landscape. This design choice also offers energy efficiency, as the forest provides natural insulation.

Paths leading to the homes are discreet, guiding residents through nature in a way that contrasts the enclosed feeling of the homes—often opening up dramatically to views over the cliffs. These paths are set between retaining walls, enhancing the contrast between entering underground spaces and emerging to cliff-edge views. Landscaping is restricted to just 3,000 square feet per 1.5-acre lot, ensuring that most of the natural flora is preserved. This careful planning maintains the native beauty of Governors Point, keeping ecological integrity at the forefront.

The design also respects the existing kayak route along the shoreline, ensuring that the natural recreational pathways remain unobstructed and inviting for kayakers.

Interior Design: Seamless Flow Indoors and Out

The interior of each Governors Point home reflects Arbel’s commitment to creating harmony between luxury and nature. The homes are capped at 2,900 square feet, maintaining a modest size that fits within the environment.

Expansive floor-to-ceiling windows bring in sweeping views of the Salish Sea and San Juan Islands, flooding rooms with natural light. These windows create a seamless connection between the indoor and outdoor spaces, making the landscape a natural part of the home’s interior.

The living room design beautifully showcases this philosophy, featuring woven leather chairs and a low-profile marble coffee table. The living area opens directly to the outdoors, framed by boulder-like modules connecting the home to the natural world. The use of earthy tones and tactile fabrics throughout the living room maintains a sense of warmth and cohesion, while built-in shelves add functionality without overwhelming the space.

The materials used throughout the homes, like locally sourced wood and stone, add warmth and texture, while low-VOC paints and reclaimed wood floors keep the building process eco-friendly.

Fixtures from Arbel’s design firm, Bocci, are featured throughout, including custom glass pendants that bring a unique glow to the rooms. The collaboration between Omer Arbel and Bocci goes back nearly two decades, allowing Bocci’s luxurious finishes to integrate seamlessly into Arbel’s architectural projects. Skylights and open floor plans ensure that natural light fills every corner, enhancing the spaciousness while connecting each room to the outdoors.

In the kitchen, an elegant concrete finish defines the space, with natural textures continuing to enhance the connection between indoor and outdoor environments. This description is based on conceptual design elements rather than a confirmed source from the images or documents provided. Large windows frame views of the sea, while the design focuses on subtle built-in features, such as hidden storage and a minimalist aesthetic, ensuring the kitchen is functional and stylish.

The Parametric Approach: Architecture With Variation

Omer Arbel takes a parametric design approach at Governors Point—meaning the homes are crafted within a set of guidelines that allow for natural variations. Each home follows core principles but adapts to the specific conditions of its location.

For example, cedar burl offcuts on the west-facing facades are arranged within set parameters but come together in unique compositions. This gives every home its personality while maintaining a consistent architectural language across the community.

Arbel’s process involves setting constraints and letting materials and site-specific factors guide the final design. This approach allows the architecture to adapt to the environment, making each home a reflection of its surroundings.

It turns construction into a creative, evolving process that celebrates unpredictability and uniqueness. Arbel also extends this parametric philosophy to interior fixtures, using materials like copper and glass to adapt to the living spaces’ flow.

The master bedroom continues the organic design language with a feature wall that mimics the boulder-shaped modules seen outside. The furniture, including the bed and integrated shelving, balances the ruggedness of natural materials and refined craftsmanship. Custom Bocci lighting adds a sculptural quality, casting soft light that enhances the serene atmosphere.

A Commitment to Sustainability

Governors Point is a model of sustainable architecture, with 98 of the 125 acres set aside as a nature reserve managed by the Whatcom Land Trust. This area features a 2.5-mile public access loop trail, allowing residents and visitors to explore the peninsula’s stunning natural beauty, including access to beaches and viewpoints on both sides.

Keeping most of the land as a nature reserve helps protect local ecosystems, balancing development and conservation.

Each residence is capped at 2,900 square feet, with an additional 1,100 square feet allowed for garages or outbuildings. By limiting the size of the homes and restricting manicured landscaping, the development ensures that the natural surroundings remain untouched as much as possible.

Using sustainable materials, such as repurposed cedar burl offcuts for exterior cladding, reduces waste and promotes regional resource efficiency. Governors Point also bans using pesticides and harmful chemicals, protecting the local flora and fauna.

Energy efficiency is key in architectural planning, with large windows designed to optimize passive solar heating while offering stunning views. The project maintains a low-density footprint by limiting the development to only 16 homes on the 27 developed acres, reducing habitat disruption and preserving wildlife corridors.

The design blends the homes into the landscape with natural features like buried facades and forest-covered roofs, setting a new standard for eco-conscious luxury.
